Huhns receives IBM Faculty Research Award
Dr. Michael Huhns, NCR professor and chair of the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, recently received an IBM Faculty Research Award to conduct research into cloud computing and virtualization. He will investigate mechanisms that allow cloud and virtualization users to share their cloud resources across institutions in the Southeast.
The mechanisms will leverage OpenStack, OpenFlow, and other standard protocols for cloud computing. Huhns hopes his research will reveal ways to more easily deploy and manage applications across integrated clouds.
"Cloud computing holds great promise for improving the accessibility and performance of many IT applications, but success requires a large enough cloud,” said Huhns. “We are helping to develop the means for organizations to link their computing resources into a shared pool, resulting in a larger and more cost-effective cloud."
