Dr. Roger Dougal took his personally-owned 1972 MGB convertible out of retirement and turned it over to electrical engineering students at the University of South Carolina’s College of Engineering and Computing. - USC attracts record research funding. The Greenville (SC) News reports that USC reached a $210.3 million record for research funding in fiscal 2009. Among the school's grants are $12.5 million from the U.S. Department of Energy and $4 million from the National Institute of Standards and Technology, both of which were awarded to the College of Engineering and Computing. The Greenville News notes, "The health-sciences colleges...received $90.8 million in grants, and the College of Engineering and Computing had nearly $25 million in research funding." learn more >
- NSF announces $20 million research award to the state. On July 23, NSF awarded $20 million to USC and 9 other SC colleges and universities to establish a statewide alliance in the field of tissue biofabrication, a pioneering research field that could lead to the production of human organs. USC’s Columbia campus will receive approximately $5 million to enhance its emerging biomedical research program. The award will fund the hiring of nine new faculty in biomathematics and bioengineering and the establishment of laboratories to support their research. learn more >

- Engineers involved in national study on aging bridges. Researchers at the College of Engineering and Computing are part of a national team that will develop technologies to assess the structural health of the nation’s aging bridges. The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) awarded the $14 million project through its Technology Innovation Program (TIP), with $4 million for USC for its part of the study. learn more >
- Dean Michael Amiridis named University Provost. Dr. Michael Amiridis, dean of the College of Engineering and Computing at the University of South Carolina, has been named the University’s vice president for academic affairs and provost. - Record award to create Energy Frontier Research Center. The University of South Carolina has been selected by the U.S. Department of Energy to house a research center that is expected to bring $12.5 million in federal funding, the largest award in the university’s history, to a team of internationally recognized energy researchers in the College of Engineering and Computing. more

- Not "Just Cluckin' Around" in Clemson! Although their motto is "Just Cluckin' Around," the Los Pollos Locos (FIRST Robotics Competition Team 2815) showed they were at the Palmetto Regional in Clemson, SC on Saturday, March 28 to do anything but -- walking away from the competition with top awards and heading to the FIRST Championship in Atlanta, GA, April 16-18. more UPDATE: Los Pollos Locos came finished in 11th place out of 87 teams in their division at the international Finals in Atlanta, April 16-18. Way to go, rookies!
- Guess which College is keeping score?! It will be up to the Gamecock baseball team to rack up the numbers that will appear on the scoreboard at the new Carolina Baseball Stadium, but it will be up to the College of Engineering and Computing to make the scoreboard work. Our faculty members have devised a method by which the scoreboard will be partly powered by a hydrogen fuel cell. more | video
